There’s something about cold weather and dark days that definitely demands a little more from your make-up bag. My top three winter beauty adjustments are to go for a foundation with a little more coverage, up my skincare game by using heavier oil-based products and opting for a darker berry or red lip.
A heavier foundation needs to be treated differently to summertime BB creams and its best to go easy on the powder to avoid a caked finish. An iridescent sheeney highlighter such as No7 Instant Radiance Highlighter on cheekbones, centre of the chin and cupids bow keeps things fresh and glowey, but still with the extra coverage needed for red noses and rosy cheeks during arctic season. Estee Lauder double wear light offers a medium buildable coverage with the long-lasting oil-free formula that the original double wear is known for. A light dusting of loose powder is always good practice to make sure your base lasts the night, but ditch the pressed powder or any matte powder skin finishes.
I find the harsh cold weather leaves my skin a little pigmented and dull, so I’ve seriously to up my skincare game when it comes to cleansing and moisturizing at this time of year. Una Brennan Super Facialist Vitamin C+ Renewing Cleansing Oil is bursting with pro-collagen goodness as well as Rosemary Oil and vitamin E, and is a really nourishing way to take your face off at the end of a cold winters day. Especially paired with L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Cream for some seriously love on the skincare front. We’ve a long-term love affair going on with Indeed Labs Hydraluron Moisture Booster so this is something I’ll always apply after cleansing before moisturising. This little beauty contains a potent Hyaluronic Acid which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water- so essentially super-charging whatever moisturizer you apply after cleansing.
It’s actually a little crazy how much a deeper, darker lip can transform your look. For years I was a nude-lip advocate, investing in a collection of Tom Ford, Illamasqua and Chanel high end nudey lip colours, but having more recently dabbled in a berry lip or brighter red I’m kind of obsessed. Apart from upping the glam factor for the festive season, which is always nice, once you play around with the different undertones and find your shade it’s without doubt, the quickest way to turn day make-up into going-out glam. Even with nothing more than a decent base and mascara, a pop of deep wintery red guarantee’s glam. My current favourite for a matte finish and staying power is Bourjois ‘Rouge Edition’ Lip Velvet in 01 ‘Personne Ne Rouge’ (bottom red in image above), at €12.49 they’ve a gorgeous velvety finish and lasting power that’s seriously impressive.
Other than that my winter routine revolves mainly around mulled wine, cosey PJ’s and napping…! Have you any winter beauty rituals? Let us know in the comments!
