Easy DIY Flower Crown

Floral-Crown-featured.png

DIY Floral CrownI can't imagine a better hair accessories for summer than a gorgeous fresh flower crowns. They are prefect for festivals, summer weddings or birthday parties... and they're really easy and fun to make!

All you need is a bit of wire (you could substitute that with a bendy branch like an olive branch or some ruscus), floral tape, scissors and flowers of choice.

DIY Floral Crown

Wrap the wire into a circular shape and measure to your head to see if the crown will fit properly. Then wrap some pretty greenery around it to cover the wire, secure it with some floral tape. Cut the stems of your blooms to 2-3'' in length and then attach them to the crown with floral tape. That's how easy it is!

You can make the crown as big or small as you want, it all depends on what flowers you choose. It would look fantastic if you used big flowers like peonies!

I love playing with flowers and usually make floral crowns whenever I have some blooms left over from arrangements. Making floral crowns would make for an amazing bridal or baby shower activity if you are looking for something different to do!

Boho Summer Blooms

Boho Summer Flowers

Decorating with flowers is our favourite way to style a table for a special event or when hosting a dinner party. It is the easiest and most fun way to make a your space look gorgeous. I usually use very plain dinnerware, maybe some golden cutlery and then jazz everything up with flowers. Now that we are coming into summer the possibilities are endless and we thought we would show you how to make some super impressive centrepieces and beautiful boho bouquet using just three types of flowers.

Boho Summer Flowers

We have used some of our faves: ranunculus, heirloom roses and purple limonium. You don't need much in way of accessories: for the centrepieces we have used some upcycled jam jars and glass bottles and all you need for the bouquet is some sharp garden scissors and copper or gold wire. We have also used some ribbon to cover up the stems - the heirloom roses have the most massive thorns!

Boho Summer Flowers Boho Summer Flowers

We went for a romantic boho look and all we did for the centrepieces was to trim the flowers to the correct length of each jam jar and added in the flowers. We have filled out the jars with some garden herbs: basil, fennel and mint - they not only look pretty but also smell amazing at the table!

With the bouquet we have started by putting together the pink ranunculus and heirloom roses and then filled out with the limonium making sure not to make the bouquet too tight and round - we wanted it a bit wild and bohemian looking! Then we have tied it up with the wire, added ribbon and then cut the stems.

TIP: Rotate your bouquet when adding flowers to make sure that it looks full from all angles.

And so it begins...

IMG_3108I have mentioned before that for us the official start of the Silly Season is marked by two things: the first sighting of the Brown Thomas Christmas windows and the switching on of the lights on Grafton Street in Dublin.

Both Becky and I get extremely excited about Christmas every year (we start planning parties, posts, videos in September) and are over the moon that it's finally here! So without further ado, here are the photos from the beautifully lit streets of Dublin.

Over the next weeks you will see lots of our Christmas projects on the blog (with the occasional not Christmas related post for a bit of balance). We will be sharing with you our seasonal gift guides and homemade gift ideas, party fashion, make-up and lot's of easy entertaining tips.

Are you in a festive mood yet?

The Cutest Mini Cupcakes & Vanilla Doughnuts Recipe

IMG_6708.jpg

Mini Vanilla Cupcakes

It's probably no secret that I love cooking & baking... and pretty much everything else to do with food so any time I get an opportunity to make a truckload of mini cupcakes I do it!! It was my little nieces fifth birthday a while ago and it was decided we are going with a princess theme and obviously the colour of choice was pink. The mini cupcakes as well as the doughnuts (which are baked) all come from one recipe and are really easy to make! I make these for kids parties, afternoon teas and all other occasions that may require cupcakes (pretty much all occasions in my life ;)).

Cupcake / Mini Doughnut batter 125 grams self-raising flour 125 grams caster sugar 125 grams soft unsalted butter 2 large eggs ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons milk

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. This batter is the easiest one in the world, I use a food processor or standalone mixer and just wizz all the ingredients, except for the milk, together (just until everything is combined into a smooth batter, if you mix it too long the cupcakes will become really heavy). Then add the milk to loosen up the batter a little, give it a quick mix and you're done!

Spoon the mixture into cupcake cases of your choice and bake for 15 minutes for mini ones and up to 20 for the regular size.

For the mini doughnuts you will need a mini-doughnut baking tray (I got mine in TK Maxx). It is easiest to fill the tray using a piping bag. Bake the doughnuts for 10 minutes or until golden - they really don't take very long so keep an eye on these babies!

Mini Vanilla Cupcakes

The Best Buttercream Icing 140g soft unsalted butter 280g icing sugar 1-2 tbsp milk ½ vanilla extract optional: food colouring & sprinkles

Buttercream icing is very easy to make, the only magical ingredient here that makes or breaks good icing is time! You need to make sure that you whip the butter (I use a standalone mixer for this) until it's gone much paler, about 2-3 minutes. Then you can start adding your icing sugar, it's best to add in two stages - ad half of it, mix well and once it's all incorporated and smooth add the other half. And again, mix for another 2-3 minutes so the icing is smooth and fluffy - you don't want heavy, stodgy icing! Add the milk and vanilla extract and mix to combine. You can add food colouring if you want. I divided my buttercream and added pink food dye to one half.

Mini Vanilla Doughnuts

Dougnut Vanilla Glaze 4 tablespoons milk 140g powdered sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla sprinkles

This could not be simpler to make - just combine everything with and whisk it together. This glaze should be quite thick, you don't want it sliding off your doughnuts. Just dip your dougnut into the glaze, place back on a baking sheet and ad sprinkles (if you want) before the glaze sets. Done!

So there you have it - two recipes in one! They are  not the healthiest treats in the world but definitely one of the nicest ones! And they look so pretty!

Skyn Iceland Skin Hangover Kit

Skyn Iceland Skin Hangover KitNot sure about you, but if I have had a few drinks or a late night it shows on my face the next morning... a lot! I don't only have the traditional dark circles under my eyes but my whole face puffs up. It also happens when I'm sick or at that time of the month. To combat this pretty nasty condition I usually go with a flannel cloth and ice cold water. If it's very bad I'll resort to these gel masks that are kept in the fridge and lie down on the couch with it on for a few minutes. It works nicely for reducing puffiness but I quite like the idea of hydrating and replenishing skincare products. I have been using the Skyn Iceland Hydro Firming Eye Gels for a long time now (a lot of makeup artists carry them in their kit, they come in handy when your model or bride has had a sleepless night). When I was in M&S last week I discovered this little Skin Hangover Kit that includes  the Eye Gels and few other hangover rescue goodies for your skin.Skyn Iceland Skin Hangover Kit

The kit includes 2 packs of the Eye Gels (they firm up the under-eye area, combat puffiness and dark circles), a full size Icelandic Relief Eye Pen (light eye cream providing relief to a puffy and tired under-eye area), a Cooling Daily Lotion (gorgeous lightweight cooling facial moisturiser that hydrates and detoxifies stressed skin) and a Arctic Face Mist (a multivitamin face mist that replenishes stressed and thirsty skin).

Cult product: Skyn Iceland Eye Gels

Skyn Iceland is a paraben-free, natural brand with cosmetics specifically designed to combat the ailments of stressed skin, a brand well worth checking out! This kit is now part of my little emergency stash of products I whip out when my skin is having a freakout.

Skyn Iceland products are available from Marks & Spencer. The Skin Hangover Kit comes in at €24 in Ireland, £17.50 in the UK. I think it makes a fabulous stocking filler for Christmas, when hangovers, skin or otherwise, will be a constant occurrence, I'm sure.

You can buy the Skin Hangover Kit here.

Sparkle, sparkle, sparkle

Essie Hors D'OeuvresIt finally arrived!!! I ordered a new Essie nail polish a while ago and it arrived last week. I'm not sure if you have already noticed but I am a bit of a magpie and love all that glitters - so this nail polish is a dream come true to me! Without further ado here it is: Essie's Hors D'oeuvres. It is a glitter polish with fine golden glitter and larger silver glitter particles mixed together - perfection!

This baby comes from Essie's latest Encrusted collection. There is six very pretty glitters in the collection but Hors D'oeuvres has caught my eye straight away. I love the combination of gold and silver (my Christmas tree is proof of that!) and it looks absolutely fabulous on the nails. Encrusted is the perfect word to describe it! My nails are very sparkly and the differently sized glitter particles give the colour lots of dimension (sorry for the weird hand shot below, I'm really not the biggest fan of my hands.... )Essie Hors D'Oeuvres

I am absolutely in love with this nail polish and will be wearing it throughout the festive season. As far as I know, this collection has launched in early December in the UK but I haven't seen any trace of it here in Ireland. I ordered mine through Amazon and it arrived within a week. If you are into glitter polishes this is definitely one to check out, one of the most beautiful ones I own!

I bought my polish here for £8.90.

Our Ist Birthday!!!

Our 1st BirthdayToday is our 1st Birthday! It's quite unbelievable that it has been a year already! This past year has been absolutely amazing for us and we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of our readers & everyone who has been supporting us. We have learned so much, met some wonderful people and all of this because of the blog. Our 1st Birthday Our 1st Birthday

Becky and I met in work a few years ago. It all started with tea breaks and chats. Very quickly it transpired that we have exactly the same interests; we are both makeup obsessed and talk about it all the time. Somehow we decided to start writing a blog together and in a way not much has changed: we still have our tea and chats, just now a lot of the chats end up as posts on the website. Our 1st Birthday

We are so excited for the coming year, we have big plans for pinkelephantbloggin.com. We have come so far since our first post & we couldn't have done it without you!

THANK YOU xxx
